Wierd but true.
It’s been out for a while now but, since I use Firefox, I’ve had no real use for it. However, my sister uses IE and has had a lot of spyware on her system for a while now; I’ve just not got around to helping her remove it.
Yesterday I got exasperated at her constant demands on my time which was being spent, very importantly, playing my X-Box. I gave her the google search string, talked her through the download and told her she should be ok from there. I snickered as I hung up the phone and got back to running from, and occasionally gunning down, the police in Driv3r.
Strangely enough I didn’t get the expected phone call fifteen minutes later. I rang her back and she said that it was still scanning. Today when I spoke to her she said the computer was fixed. No more pop ups, running faster blah blah blah. All the hallmarks of a computer running free of spyware.
I decided to have a look at this miracle cure myself.
I must say, it looks very swish. Looking in the process manager made me smile though; I spy, with my little eye, a process called GIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe!
After going through the tools that the program has and the apparent efficiency of the actual scan itself the more cynical of us (i.e. me) would say that it’s a decent piece of software mainly because MS haven’t been able to wreck it yet. I think the only thing they’ve done is slap their MS looking front end on it.
Never fear, there’s plenty of time for them to break it yet.
The Advanced Tools section is very handy, especially the System Explorers. It lists all activex components installed, programs that start at boot, IE’s BHO’s and settings… everything really. It even has stuff that I think I may have found useful once ever in my career with an editor for the windows host file and a list of LSP’s. Overkill on all but the most persistant malware.
All in all I’m impressed. I sincerely hope that microsoft don’t do too much to it as it does the job admirably as it is. I’m sure that they won’t feel right without releasing a product without at least some bugs in it.
Basically MS need to look at the real problem. The boat has a lot of holes in it, the hold is filling with water, and instead of patching them they hand you a bigger bucket. The bucket is handy and even welcomed, but eventually you’re still going to want to jump ship.
Like the title says, I’ve got so much to do today. Really. That’s why I’m posting for the 3rd time. o_O
Anyway; I found a huge compendium of those little 80×15 blog buttons that everyone and his dog seem to have on their blog. I jumped on the bandwagon (see right).
A site that I rediscover every time I delve into the wonders of CSS is CSS Zen Garden. It’s an excellent way to learn some of the neat designs that can be achieved using CSS and no tables at all. Add to that the fact that you can download each CSS file to browse through and it’s a great resource.
Just in case the reader(s) of this site are baffled by the constant change of banner image and layout tweaks, don’t be.
This site is, after all, a platform for me to play with “Zope”:http://www.zope.org and use it for a real practicle purpose.
If anything doesn’t work; it will. If something dissapears; it was crap.
Just as a follow up to my previous post;
The doctors are impressed with the speed at which I’m healing. To be fair while my eyes, lip and cheek were swollen like a bitch I never thought that the injuries were that bad. The only issue I had was the state of my right (and only working) eye.
But the scratch on the cornea is gone and the inflammation of the eye is basically finished. The eye doc said he wasn’t sure he’d seen a patient recover so fast from those kind of eye injuries.
If anyone out there knows of any private clinics who will graft Adamantium to my skeleton for a price, please contact me.
I never thought I lived in a crime free zone. Actually it’s quite the opposite; I live in a pretty shady area, but having lived there all my life I’ve come to terms with it. The overriding factor though, was that I never thought it would happen to me.
As it goes, it wasn’t much of a mugging. I was fairly wasted and walking the last little stretch home after running out of money for the Taxi… no biggie. Someone to distract while another ran up behind and floored me.
At the time, through my alcohol induced stupor I literally thought: “What the fuck!?”
It took me a few seconds to work out what was happening… you would have thought the balaclava gave it away. “Don’t make it hard on yourself, gimme yer stuff”. Haha… like some cheesy line out of a bad film.
The words out of my mouth were inevitable. “Fuck You.” The fact that I was being robbed for money I didn’t have pissed me off. A short and nasty fight followed which I was always going to lose given my state, but I satisfied my own personal pride in not just giving up and letting them win.
I know I hurt the guy. I think I may have hurt him more than he hurt me. Either way, it was still pointless.
Other than that I had an awesome night out on Friday. Next Friday I’m going to make sure I have enough money for the taxi. That, or borrow the telescopic night stick one of my mates has and see if I can find the twat who did it. Fucking lowlife.
