Smoking

Whilst reading Ms. Jones’ blog today I had an introspective moment. I wondered what happened that prevented me from taking up the ‘orrible ‘abit.

When I think about it all of my friends are either smokers or ex-smokers and their habits all stem from when we were around 14 to 16. So how did it skip me? I don’t remember my peers saying, “C’mon mate, it’s really cool.” In fact I don’t recall any kind of pressure to smoke from anyone; directly, indirectly or otherwise.

Maybe it’s because I was such an avid sportsman and I didn’t want to ruin my ‘temple’. (/sarcasm)

The only thing I’m missing out on nowadays is a pointless activity to:

  • Literally burn my money
  • Increase the chances of contracting lung cancer1
  • Bunk off work for 5 minutes to chat to the office hottie2
1. Lets be honest here. According to most research today breathing, living, walking, not walking, beef and crisps can all be attributed to the rise in cancer cases. Give a scientist a theory and, with enough money poured into the research, they can prove anything. It’s just a case of interpreting the numbers how you want to see them. 2. Sometimes I almost think it would be worth it.

Splee the Critic: Hero

Hero, starring Jet Li. Here is one of those snappy ‘back of the box’ type quotes about this film by me:

I’ve never been subjected to so much bullshit in such a short space of time.

This film sucks. It takes a lot for me to say that because I’m a martial arts film fan. The storyline is absolutely appauling and very difficult to keep track of, even more so than regular films from that side of the planet. Unfortunately the fighting just doesn’t cut the mustard and, therefore, doesn’t save the film from the abyss of boredom.

I was tempted to turn it off, but I just couldn’t believe that the film wouldn’t get better. It didn’t. Don’t buy it. I would even suggest against renting it.

I created a category specifically because of this film, and I think I’m going to slap my opinons of various films and books on here because… well, because I can. :)

Splee relearnifies.

Here I am, munching my way through a big pack of Tangfastics and browsing the Open University website. I’m considering finishing up my degree through the OU and I find myself actually getting quite excited about some of the component courses required for the Information Technology and Computing degree.

Why excited? Well, for starters, I’m a geek. :) Learning more about IT in general is a good thing and my hunger for such knowledge has got me where I am today in terms of my IT skills. Secondly most of these courses would directly help me in my day to day work.

My degree, which I didn’t finish the first time around, is one of the things that I want to get but now I’m in a more stable financial situation I’m also after an MCSE and maybe some Cisco qualifications. I would also like to get some kind of qualifications in Java, although just doing a small training course will probably suffice as OOP is OOP, no matter what language.

Has anyone out there in the blogosphere done any of the above qualifications, or the courses related to them? I’d love to find out what other people think about the relevance of them in practise.

I saw this on the Microsoft website and thought I’d share it with you. At last my Mum will be able to translate what my younger brother is telling her!

Spam-a-licious

I got hit by a lot of spam overnight and, I must say, Wordpress’ updated comment spam filtering worked wonders. I had 153 comments marked as spam and only 22 (all from the same source, and cleverly worded) made it through.

I’m not sure that the upgrade sorted some of the options though, as new posters are supposed to be automatically added to the moderation list until I give them the ok. The only way past that is to have your URL on my blogroll, which this particular online poker emporium most certainly isn’t.

Something to look at if I get a second I suppose.
