Nothing to see here

Today has been a triumph in the field of Advanced Procrastination. I’ve successfully dodged any meaningful work and feel quite happy about that. I’m still feeling a bit worse for wear which has taken the shine off my non-accomplishment, but that can’t be helped.

On a more worrying note I’ve noticed that I have had pins and needles in my left hand all bloody day. That’s not a good thing, surely? I’m sure that’s a warning sign before a heart attack!? What a disturbing thought. Alternatively it could be how I slept/passed out on my sofa last night, using my left arm as a pillow. The latter is more likely.

I’ve just found possibly the best hosting deal for a geek ever. It is run by Lycos Europe and it is a Virtual Server of your very own.

Basically a virtual server is indestinguishable from a completely seperate machine, but the providers cut down the actual amount of hardware… they would probably run a dozen or more virtual servers on one machine.

This means that you get the flexability of a dedicated server for the price of standard hosting. You just can’t go wrong. My only decision now is to figure out which version of linux to put on there. It’s a toss-up between Debian 3.1 and Fedora Core 3.

I had a fairly horrible experience last night. While on the way out my mum rang me. That in itself wasn’t horrible. The conversation, however, was a different matter:

Mum: Have you seen your sister? Splee: Nope. Why? M: She went down the road to get some bread from the shop about 45 minutes ago and she’s not back yet! S: Really? Have you checked [here], [there] and [everywhere]? M: Yes! Damn that girl!

After a fairly worrying 30 minutes with a distinct lack of sister, she saunters home.

A fairly tearful but relieved mother rang to inform me that sister had decided to introduce herself to the new tenants of the shop which we live above. The stupid girl had her phone on silent. What’s the point in having a mobile phone if you never answer it, I ask you?

Many apologies

It’s been a while since my last post due to my workload, social life and family functions. Oh so much alcohol and, as a result, days in the office where productivity is low to say the least. The problem with that is this: I can’t afford to have low productivity.

I’m currently developing the website for the company I work for. This is no normal website though. This is the website from hell. Basically it is a means to deliver our… er… deliverables to our clients via the web in an attempt to go completely paperless. Simple enough in essence, if only the management would stop moving the goalposts every 10 minutes. Whenever I get a feature finalised they decide that that’s not quite what they want this afternoon but it could all change by morning. sigh

Oh well, back to the grindstone for now. Expect a couple of posts today as I’m hungover and I’m not sure I can actually face real work. I’ll just sit here with my code editor open and a look of concentration on my face. That normally does the trick.

Mundania

Life is trundling by as usual. Well, not entirely ‘as usual’ because I’ve done absolutely nothing worth mentioning. So, in fact, work is trundling by as usual and my life is on hold.

Talking of work, I’ve come to realise that I’m being taken for a ride by my employers with regards to my pay. First off, let me just say that I’m not a greedy person and I don’t constantly think about money. However, when one realises what others in ones profession get paid and one then compares that with ones own wages, one tends to get irritated.

Another problem is my promotion prospects. There are none. There are only two people in our IT department, one of them being me. Add to that the fact that my boss really isn’t very good at IT and the running of the servers, client machines, software and website fall squarely on my shoulders. This means that my workload is crazy; another catalyst for irritation when wages come to mind.

I’ve only been at the company for 6 months, but I think that it may be time to find something else.

7:45 and all’s well!

Wow, it’s amazing what a week off will do for your energy levels. Up at 6.30 in the ante-meridian with no bother or fuss! Normally I drag myself out of bed half an hour before 9am, and even then it’s a struggle.

I must take time off more often.

Holiday happenings

This time off I had from work has been, without doubt, my most outstanding display of lazyness since I left university. I have done nothing but sit around watching TV, playing my XBox and PC games and… did I mention watching TV? It’s been great.

As a result my Sky+ schedule is set up for every show I could ever want to watch, my second computer has a TV card in it so I can watch shows while working/playing, and I’ve found that my destroyed laptop1 is irrepairable.

All in all, a successful holiday.

1. My laptop has been on the fritz for a good few months now. I think it’s some kind of overheating issue, but I can’t be sure. Anything that can be removed and allow the laptop to keep functioning has been removed. Still no joy. Sometimes it will run for hours and hours, other times it doesn’t even get past POST. I’ll be purchasing a new laptop soon. I’ve just got to decide if I want to go PC again or turn to them.
