You know that feeling you get when you’re at the gym and you’re ‘pumping iron’? Yeah, that burning feeling. The feeling of lactic acid building up in your muscles as your body starts anaerobic glycolysis. (ooh, check me out with my big words!)
Take that burning feeling. Now imagine that burning feeling multiplied by, oh I dunno, about 10. Make it stay in your calf muscles and shins for about 15 minutes. Imagine that you can’t physically walk due to the excruciating pain.
Great, well done and sorry for putting you through that. That’s how I feel after I’ve walked to work. It’s really starting to worry me. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the most active person in the world. I go to the gym every now and then but I don’t have too much of an issue when I’m there, even when I work myself hard… I’m not amazingly unfit. However, a simple 30 minute walk destroys my lower legs. I don’t think it’s anything serious, it’s just annoying and painful.
Does anyone out in blogland know how to minimise lactic acid build up? And if anyone says I need more potassium in my diet I shan’t be happy, as that invariably means I have to eat bananas. I can’t stand ‘nanas.

Get your Chi moving my man. If you get your God damn chi in balance, your lactic acid build up can suck it.

A tip might be to stretch a little before you go out for the walk mate. Will help get things moving. Nice site by the way

Wedge: If I knew how to get my Chi moving I’d not be bitching about the burn ;)
Jacko: Cheers mate, good to see you here man.

When I was a county level athlete, we were always told not to let it build up when training. ie to take short (15-30 second) breaks every few minutes.

Stretch your calves out after the walk, more importantly.
Have you only just started walking to work? Maybe it’s something about the way you walk (the biomechanics).
Weird…
What sort of shoes are you wearing, Splee, stilettos? ;)

I think I would get a few odd looks if I wore stilettos to work Miss D’Wivvers. Plus, Stilettos require a miniskirt in this town, and I don’t have the legs for it.
I’ve been walking to work for a couple of months now and it’s been a gradually increasing issue. Maybe you’re right, I just need new shoes.

take an enzyme. go to the health food store to inquire which is the best enzyme for your issue. The enzyme will rid your body of too much lactic acid build up. Also, massage is helpful but expensive. I worked with a personal trainer he made me use a foam roller to work the lactic acid on my calves. Good luck
