Hi Dude,
I know this life, I lived the same but in Paris for more than 5 years.

But now it's over, I decided to go abroad a to discover a totally different life. Now I'm in the middle east and I enjoy the sun, great art of living and fun with over expatriates.

I can tell you this is a great experience.

Think about it.

I'm gradually getting there. I'm getting up earlier and going to bed earlier in small stages, and it does seem to work. The code I write when I'm fresh is a lot more coherent.

I wouldn't be able to do it without sky+ though. All the good programs are on after 11pm :D

you're doing it the wrong way round, and yes, it's extremely exhausting.

here's a better way. bear in mind, people who are not-morning people regard me as someone who is SERIOUSLY not a morning person. so what i'm about to type is something i learned very much the hard way, and it still always requires self-discipline to re-start it.

do your coding EARLY. save the afternoon for donkey work.
you will end up producing 3 or 4 times as much productive code, in terms of actual functionality and appeal-to-users. and you will be comparatively much more rested.

so: get up at 6. allow an hour of stumbling around, eating brekkie, nursing a cup of tea over a book or watching cartoons for half an hour, that sort of thing.
7:- SERIOUS cup of coffee (eg 1.5-2 spoons instant) and go coding. no one else there, no way you can think about anything else cos it's too fucking early: total concentration.
you will get half of your normal day's work done by 9, and nearly all by 11. then you can relax and let your mind do random things. which actually helps you big time, over time.

given that you are multi-tasking at the moment, work on your mate's stuff till 8:30, then bail for work. you'll always be early for work so they'll be happy. and your mate's stuff will be tight and clean and USEFUL.

i realise it sounds both alien and painful. but try it for a couple of weeks and notice the difference in the quality of the work you're doing, and in the quality of the life you're leading. it's startling.

You're right, too fucking far from a compromise.

I'll settle for pintage though ;)

Speaking of which, what are you up to this weekend buddy? I don't know about you but I'd like to spend as much of it as possible in a beer garden somewhere. Up for that?
