Wordpress Plugin competition

Mark from Weblog tools collection is holding a Wordpress plugin competition and, assuming there are enough donations during April, he will present a Sony PSP to the winner of the “Best of show” category. There is also the opportunity to win $500 from weblogs.us for the Best Community Plugin category.

I have a couple of plugins that I’m working on/I’ve been thinking about developing and, assuming multiple entries are allowed, I’ll be entering my offerings.

Update: The plugin competition now has it’s own blog.

Online Knowledgebase

I’ve set up my own knowledgebase. This is mainly for my own use as I’m tired of writing things down and losing them 10 minutes later. However, articles/questions can be freely submitted so if you’ve come across a problem and managed to fix it feel free to post it there for others and your own reference. Also feel free to post a question. I’ll try and answer that question as best I can and it will become a fully fledged kb article of its own. :)

Update: I’ve succesfully broken the kb. I’ll post when it’s actually up and running, but I’ve been thinking about it and I might just use another installation of wordpress… it has categories, keywords, is searchable, has user comments and can have users submit articles as long as they’re registered. The more I mull it over the more it sounds like a good idea.

Watch this space.

Mobile viruses

I struggle to comprehend the reason for computer viruses. I can just about pin the “corporate espionage” tag onto viruses that propogate and then attack a certain website, but the ones that just create hassle, backdoors and generally screw your system are just eHooliganism in my opinion. There is absolutely no need for it.

Now they have viruses that attack mobile phones. That is completely and utterly malicious and serves no purpose other than to propagate itself. What is the point?

Fortunately the MMS part of this new Mabir virus is not active, but it just demonstrates that such a thing can, and now probably will, be released at some point.

If you have the virus there are removal instructions available. In fact, those details are good to read even if you don’t have the virus as it may help you in identifying it before it gets installed on your phone.

Splee the Critic: Creative Zen Micro

Ok, I lied. It seems that setting up the new server to my satisfaction is going to take far too long for me not to make a post. So, without further adieu, the goods:

As you may have read, I ordered myself a Creative Zen Micro last week and I can honestly say that it’s the one purchase I’ve made in recent times that has genuinely made me happy.

It is funky looking, very small, light, and I can lose myself in the glowing/pulsating backlight. I also like the touchpad controls. Due to their layout and the unit’s menu system it took me less than five seconds to work out how to use the thing. There’s a reason why the instruction book is only 4 pages!

The sound quality, while dependant on the mp3/wma, is good but is improved upon once you lose the standard headphones. Add to that the FM radio, customisable EQ, contact management, alarm, and a whole plethora of other funky features which I’ll probably not use regularly, and you have a very cool piece of equipment. Oh, and I can use it as a USB Harddrive too, should I have enough space and a need.

If you’re looking for an MP3 player but you wish to skip the iPod bandwagon I heartily reccomend the Zen Micro. The only negative that I’ve found with the unit is the fact that the included headphones are uncomfortable and don’t produce great sound quality. Oh, and they’re white. :)

splee.blog is moving… again.

I’ve just got myself some real hosting specifically for this blog, but I will also be consolidating all my other hosting packages into this one eventually.

Once the host is up and running I probably won’t be posting until the transfer is complete. If I’m feeling sparky I may even do a new theme just for the move. I’m going to be adding a cool new comment/shoutbox type toy anyway, so I may as well make the whole thing new, eh?

See ya all on t’other side.
