Theme

The more I look at it the more despondent I get with my current theme. When I switched from the old blue theme I was looking for something simple but effective. As usual I added and added until I had a full theme again, rather than the sheer simplicity I wanted.

I’m going to strip this theme down again to the bare essentials and I will not allow myself to add all the boxes, sections, colours and other paraphernalia that I normally get caught up with. I think I’m still going to say in the pink side of things though… I kinda like the pink for some reason. I reckon I’ve just got a bit too much of it at the moment.

TurboGears

Yesterday I found TurboGears, a web application framework written in Python.

Basically TurboGears is to Python what Ruby on Rails is to Ruby, or so it seems. I’ve used neither Rails nor Ruby to base that comparison on, but I’ve read a lot about both.

At the moment I don’t have the time or patients to learn another programming language, especially as Ruby is used in the same problem domain as Python. Having quite a bit of Python experience under my belt has prevented my Ruby head from ever being used.

Now, the documentation for TurboGears is virtually non existant, but the whole framework is built upon some great Python modules who’s documentation can more than make up for any shortfall. In fact, that’s the great thing about TurboGears: Even though it’s pretty new it’s already fairly stable and feature complete as it is mainly glue that holds together the modules it’s based on.

Fully Web 2.0 focused, it uses SQLObject, CherryPy, Kid, and MochiKit to make the magic happen and can use any number of database backends, including sqlite, to store your data.

I’m going to be building a site using this very soon and I’ll probably be posting about my progress.

New Car

Recently my sister had an accident in my car leaving me “sans transportation”, and her and her friends with a collection of stitches, broken ribs, bumps, and bruises. Thankfully the car - a Rover 200 - did it’s job in the safety arena and they got out scott free if you take into consideration the damage absorbed by the car’s body.

As a net result, I’ve been shopping for a new car. I wanted a small hatchback with decent fuel consumption, good looks and a low price tag… hah, doesn’t everyone want those things out of a car?

As it was my birthday on Saturday I was out shopping to get some birfday clothes (my family has a rule that we don’t go and buy clothes and wrap them up… what’s the point, half the time you won’t like them and the other half you have to take em back because they don’t fit…) and we drifted past the Audi dealership. I popped in as I love the high-spec Audis - they just look so meaty.

Blow me down if there isn’t the perfect car for me sat on the lot. A black A3, ex-demonstrator, 2.0 TDI, right in my price range. Insurance isn’t too racy either, probably due to the Diesel engine.

With a bit of luck I’ll be putting down the deposit tomorrow morning and I should have the car by the weekend. If you want to contact me this weekend, don’t bother. I’ll be out on the road.
