“I hate Internet Explorer with a passion”. I wonder just how many blog posts start with those sentiments? I wonder how many of those people hate IE for it’s poor CSS support? I wonder how many people hate IE for it’s insecure nature?
Well, you might be surprised to find that you’re in a position to make a small contribution to help prevent IE staying the dominant browser for no good reason other than it’s already on your desktop when you install windows. Not only that but, if you can believe it, you might even make a buck or two out of it as well.
Explorer Destroyer have set out to achieve the unachievable: Banish Internet Explorer to minority-ville.
They written some quite nifty JavaScript that detects if your site’s visitors are viewing the page in the unholiest of browsers and display a referral button to download FireFox, packaged with google toolbar. There are 3 ‘levels’ of warning:
- A warning section at the top of the page, allowing you to scroll and view the site as normal.
- A warning that blanks the whole page until you click continue to view the site.
- Uber-strength I-couldn’t-care-less-you-dirty-IE-user page blocking that will only let you view the site via something other than IE
This referral system is all done through Google’s AdSense program so you could actually make some cash for yourself via this. Unfortunately the FireFox referral system is only available in the U.S. so it’s not on this site… I’ll think about it though, if/when the FireFox refferals become available here in Blighty.
